Oct 2021 - Choosing my sperm donor took online dating to a whole other level LOL. Living in Canada, and it being the middle of covid when I embarked on this journey, there were slim pickings when choosing the other half of this baby to be. I wasn’t sure what I was looking for. At first, it was who was most physically appealing to me, but I realized quickly that was not going to be the deciding factor.
You would see someone cute and the right height and then click their profile, and they would have a few different genetic markers or something in their family history that was an absolute negative. Or you would find the best match, and they would have nothing in stock. It was mentally draining and a little bit of pressure. This would be the other half of my child, and I had to get it right.
It’s cool to think you get to choose every aspect of the other half of your child, down to the hair and eye color. You also get to see the health history of their extended family, also their occupations and hobbies.
What was cool was each donor had to write an essay of who they were, what they liked and why they chose to be donors. That was nice to read and gave me a sense of who they were, and it made them become a real person to me and not just a donor number.
Another aspect that was important to me was choosing someone who had an open ID, which means that when my child turns 18, they will have the option of having access to all of their donor's history. I think that is important when they want to discover who they are.
I know I will make it known to my baby how they came about from the start. They will grow up knowing how much love I had within me to give to them. Thankfully, there are many books that I can read to my child about how they came to be in the world.
I purchased my donor on Thanksgiving weekend 2021, so it was something to be really thankful for. The first donor I bought was about 1200 US dollars. I was about to receive the treatment IUI, intrauterine insemination, basically artificial insemination. The sperm is placed directly into the uterus using a small catheter. This treatment aims to improve the chances of fertilization by increasing the number of healthy sperm that reach the fallopian tubes when the woman is most fertile.
I was so excited when the donor was purchased. The next step was waiting for my cycle to start.
